Hybrid Network Protocol for Disaster Situations

In the case of disaster recovery and resilience, we developed a Hybrid Network Emergency Communication protocol with all underlying algorithms that can be rapidly deployed in areas of large scale disasters.

The work is based on collaboration with a Spanish university and resulted in developing a common middleware and system that allows unified communication and data collection over both MANET and sensor networks.

Why this research is important

In the last decade, there has been an increase in the number of natural disasters and terrorist attacks that were massive in scale and civilian casualties. In most of these disaster situations, rescue operations have been carried out on large scale. This paper assumes a heterogeneous network disaster recovery scenario and proposes a cost effective and easy to deploy hybrid communication system to achieve rescuers’ requirements and cooperation. Designing a new protocol for hybrid network with different access protocols and with mobility and failures poses several challenges. The proposed protocol uses the Inter-Domain Messaging (IDM) framework to achieve the goal. The simulation shows the functionality of the hybrid protocol model (non-IP routing protocol), and maintains routes without the lower layer detection of link breaks.

The impact of our research

The research on the Hybrid communications system that comprises both MANET and sensor networks is influencing the standardisation efforts in the final COST Action 290 report and the Autonomous network theme and in particular their usage for emergency systems.

Our research outputs have influenced the COST 290 project and have also been included in the Final report of the COST 290 project. Prof. Al-Begain a played significant role in authoring and editing the final report.
